Consuming Enough Fiber on the Keto Diet

‘Tis the season! The season for fad diets and get-fit-quick ploys, that is! It’s important to be wary of any diet that seems too good to be true (because they usually are) and to talk to your doctor before making any major change. However, one trendy diet that has grown in popularity in recent years seems here to stay—the Keto Diet. If you’re thinking of trying this regimen to jump-start your health and wellness goals, it’s important to make sure you are including enough fiber in this low-carb diet. After all, we know that fiber is extremely important to everyday health and well-being, and that doesn’t change just because you’re eating differently!

The ketogenic diet involves the consumption of high-fat and low-carb foods, similar to another popular diet, Atkins. During keto, your body shifts its metabolism away from carbs and towards fats and ketones, thereby lowering blood sugar and insulin levels. This diet’s benefits range from weight loss to reducing the risk of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.1 While taking part in the Keto Diet, there are many foods to avoid, and unfortunately, many of those foods are high in fiber. Fruits, grains, beans, and root vegetables are just a few foods that you’re supposed to avoid during keto. Instead, the focus is on the consumption of meat, eggs, and full-fat dairy products. While these items can be healthy, they tend to lack other nutrients, like fiber. Luckily, there are a variety of low-carb, high fiber options that you can consider incorporating into your Keto Diet.2

  • Nuts: Flax Seeds, Almonds, Chia Seeds
  • Vegetables: Artichoke, Broccoli, Celery, Asparagus
  • Fruits: Raspberries, Avocados, Tomatoes
