Fiber is vital at all stages of life, including when you’re growing a new life! Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also come with not-so-fun symptoms, including food aversions and cravings, nausea, and fatigue. Especially during this time, making sure you are getting the nutrients you need for you and your little one to thrive is as important as it is difficult. But fear not! There are plenty of delicious and convenient ways to get the fiber you need.

First, it’s important to know why fiber is so important for a mom-to-be. During pregnancy, hormones can cause the digestive process to slow. Dietary fiber helps keep things on track and moving through the digestive system. This metabolic slowdown, combined with organ displacement, can have some uncomfortable results. A higher intake of fiber during pregnancy can help with these two pain points. Pregnant women should strive to eat at least 28 grams of dietary fiber per day while they’re eating for two!1

So, when those aversions kick in, but you know you and baby need your fiber, try some of these tasty, high-fiber snack ideas to get your daily fill!

  • Good, old fashioned fruit:
    Apples, berries, and pears are all good sources of fiber that are easy to enjoy during bed rest or when you’re on the go!
  • Oatmeal:
    Try traditional steel-cut oatmeal or pre-portioned microwavable packs if you need something convenient. Oatmeal is a quick, easy, and filling way to get an extra 5 grams of dietary fiber along with key vitamins and minerals!
  • Edamame for the eda-mama:
    Raw, cooked, or packaged crisps, these immature soybean pods are packed with fiber, protein, vitamin C, and folate. Add a little sea salt or other seasoning for an extra kick.
  • Avocado:
    When that Mexican food craving hits, try a healthy way to satisfy it! Reach for some guacamole and whole grain chips to get a fiber-ful fix of nutrients and deliciousness.

Dietary fiber intake is important for all, but especially for the mom-to-be. Maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough fiber while “eating for two” can be difficult, but it is vital to the health of both mother and child.
