No one likes being sick. So, this cold and flu season, make sure you’re taking the best care of yourself to prevent sickness. Preventative care that protects your body’s immune system can include cleanliness, general body-care, and eating well.
We all know that washing our hands and using hand sanitizer can help us avoid germs. But there are other ways to keep clean during peak virus season.1
- Avoid touching your face, especially your mouth
- Shower daily
- Stay away from sick people
- Don’t share food or drinks
- Clean everyday household objects, including phones, computers, kitchen counters, desk space, purses, or wallets daily.
Taking care of yourself physically is vital to preventing disease. Perhaps most obviously, you should get a flu shot every year. The flu strain can change from year to year, so it’s important that this becomes an annual habit.
Sleep hygiene can be just as important as physical cleanliness. Try to get eight hours of sleep a night. Sleep allows the body time to heal and provides energy for the next day.
Regular exercise also helps to provide the body with energy. Just remember to clean off your weights and machines before and after use!
The food you consume plays a part in keeping you well. Whole foods, specifically fruits and vegetables, are ideal for promoting health. Certain foods that have been shown to specifically boost immunity, include: blueberries, dark chocolate, turmeric, oily fish, broccoli, sweet potatoes, spinach, ginger, almonds, oranges, and red bell peppers.2 These foods provide antioxidants, anti-inflammatory effects, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin A, and flavonoids—all of which aid your body in staying well. Additionally, almost all are a good source of dietary fiber!
Fiber helps to boost immunity via its anti- inflammatory properties. Soluble fiber changes the makeup of immune cells, making them anti-inflammatory, which helps you recover from an unfortunate sickness faster.3
