Got Fiber?

January 30, 2019

When thinking about updating your diet and exercise regimen, you might benefit from researching the habits of some of your favorite athletes or fitness icons. From their professionally constructed meal plans to their workout schedules and supplements, athletes seem to have the magic wellness formula. Michael Phelps famously consumes an average of 12,000 calories a day, in meals comprised of fried egg sandwiches and pounds of pasta. Phelps’s medal collection is evidence enough that this regimen works for him. However, dietary needs are specific to the individual; before you assume Michael Phelps’s astronomical calorie intake will help you reach your fitness goals, consider the ever-changing thinking on diet and wellness.

Many NFL players have shifted to vegan diets. What’s more, they have also started to better understand the importance of a fiber-filled diet.1 The Boston Globe believes this new dietary movement kicked off with none other than Tom Brady whose vegetable-based diet has aided in him being able to continue his athletic success into his 40s.2 After Brady’s diet became known, other athletes followed suit. Football players such as Derrick Morgan and DaQuan Jones, Tennis champion Venus Williams, and Snowboarding legend Hannah Teter were all onboard.

What triggered this change? Outside of the overall physical health benefits, there are mental health benefits as well. A study conducted by the American Journal of Health Promotion found that when placing individuals with a BMI of 25 or higher, or those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, on a low-fat, low-glycemic, high-fiber vegan diet, there was a major boost in mental health benefits.3 Additionally, the study reported increases in productivity and improvements in anxiety, depression and fatigue.

It’s hard to get the daily fiber you need from food alone, and it’s even harder to get that fiber from food while maintaining optimal calorie intake. Fiber Choice is a delicious and convenient way to help you get more of the daily recommended fiber you need.
